Description

John L. Lewis had been president of the United Mine Workers from 1920 and was president of the newly organized Congress of Industrial Organizations, making him one of the most powerful labor leaders in the U.S.. William Green was president of the larger and older American Federation of Labor. In the labor organizing dispute between the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the CIO/UMW, Lewis had the support of Pennsylvania Senator Guffey and Joseph Kennedy. Green appeals to the old William Penn-looking Pennsylvania character for support. Green labels Kennedy as nothing more than a Charlie McCarthy dummy mouthpiece for Lewis.
