In this photo by Jack Corn, Kentucky coal miner Jerry Rainey and his family pose in front of their four-room home. The family was threatened with eviction from company housing during the 1973-1974 strike at Brookside Mine Company.
Original caption: “The Jerry Rainey family in front of their four room company house they rent from the Brookside Mine Company (background). They had been ordered to leave it in violation of a Kentucky state law that doesn’t allow eviction during a strike. The mine is owned by the Duke Power Company of Harlan County near Middlesboro in the southeast part of the state. Rainey was born in the mining camp, worked in Detroit, Michigan, for awhile, but came back to Harlan County.”
