This monument of Jefferson Davis, by Edward Virginius Valentine (sculptor) and William C. Noland (architect), was unveiled on June 3, 1907, the 99th anniversary of the Confederate President’s birth during a Confederate reunion attended by thousands of veterans. A sixty-five foot column rises above a bronze statue of Jefferson Davis giving a speech.
There had been some opposition to the statues along Monument Avenue in Richmond since their installation because of their celebration of the Confederacy. In 2020, the Jefferson Davis Monument was vandalized and its statue was toppled during protests against police brutality and racism in policing. Additional elementsof the monument were removed by City of Richmond on July 8, 2020.
