This is a photograph of a group of Confederate prisoners. The Civil War was the first large and prolonged conflict recorded by the camera. Mathew Brady and other photographers—most notably Alexander Gardner, George Barnard, and Timothy O’Sullivan—photographed many battlefields, camps, towns, and people touched by the war.
