The General Robert E. Lee Monument by the McNeel Marble Co. was unveiled in 1910 in Marianna, Arkansas.
Located in the near the county courthouse in a county that bears his name, the lifesize marble statue depicts the Confederate General in his officer’s uniform. Looking straight ahead, he is shown holding a hat at his right side while his left hand rests on his sword.
Near the midpoint of the 20 foot high base is written “Fidelus, Fortissimus.” Below it is inscribed with “1861-1865 Erected by D. G. Govan Chapter U.D.C. ‘No Braver for a brighter land had a cause so grand'”
On the lower part of the base, the east side is inscribed, “Their Memories E’er Shall Remain for Us: And Their Names, Bright Names, Without Stain for Us: ‘Our Heroes in Gray’.” The north side is inscribed, “Retreat, They Struggled, They Toiled, They Conquered Defeat, Those Men with Their Thinning Locks of Gray. God Bless those Boys of the Sixties, Our Veterans of Today.” On the west side is inscribed, “Dead Heroes! Did We Hear One Say? Dead, Nver! They will Live for Aye in Hearts of Love; On History’s Page They’ll Live through Every Coming Age; They’ll Live while Valor’s Deeds are Sung in Praise from the Heart and Tongue.”
