The Freedom Train was a passenger train converted into exhibit space for a nationwide traveling exhibition of the most hallowed documents in American history. In total, 133 items (127 documents and 6 flags) were selected for display on the Freedom Train. These included the Magna Carta, the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. The exhibit traveled to 307 cities in all 48 states as part of the AHF’s National Rededication Program.
The purpose of this program was to impress upon the American public the importance of their personal rights and freedoms, and the legacy which the founders of the United States have bequeathed to successive generations of Americans. Financing for the tour was provided by fundraising drives throughout the country.
