In March 1978 and February 1979, American farmers staged protest marches in Washington, DC, in order to bring attention to the economic difficulties that they faced. These marches included long processions of tractors, rallies in front of the U.S. Capitol, and demonstrations in front of the offices of the USDA.
This photograph comes from a series taken by Murray Lemmon, a freelance photographer who documented the farmers’ marches for the USDA. The photographs, which are uncaptioned, show the processions of tractors traveling through the city, portraits of farmers and their families, and many of the banners and placards that the farmers created for the marches.
