Senator Hiram Johnson had been one of the founders of the Progressive Party and was Theodore Roosevelt’s running mate in 1912. Johnson made a determined run for the Republican Presidential nomination in 1924, but found it difficult to convince potential delegates of his ability to win the election. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman depicts Johnson turning away from the Sphinx (representing the New Jersey Republican Party) pointing his finger and commenting “deaf.” At the Republican convention, Johnson garnered few votes.
