This monument to Confederate dead was dedicated in 1869 in Union City, Tennessee. The monument stands nearly forty feet in height and was built of brick covered in with a stucco-like material and painted white. Located within one of the half-rounded recesses there is an image of a broken sword and the inscription “Unknown Confederate Dead.” Surrounding the monument are headstones and footstones for nearly 30 unknown Confederate soldiers who were reburied here in 1869.
The monument is considered by many to be the first such monument to unknown Confederate soldiers constructed a mere 4 years after the Civil War’s end.
