This photograph was taken around 1880 at Fort Grant, Arizona. The fort was established in 1872 at the foot of Mount Graham, in southeastern Arizona. Soldiers from the fort patrolled southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, protecting stage routes and settlers against criminals and Apache Indians. Among the officers and women grouped on the porch steps are “Charles Nordstrom and his wife,” although it is unclear from the caption which two people are the Nordstroms.
