During WWI, German nationals were classified as “alien enemies” and subject to internment and the seizure of their property. As a German national, Mrs. Carl Muck was subject to these terms.
The original caption for this photograph reads: Mrs. Carl Muck, wife of the former leader the Boston Symphony Orchestra after registering as an alien enemy. On her right is Chas. A. Ellis who tried to protect her from the cameramen and the crowd which surrounded the police station where she had just registered. Her property was seized by the U.S. Government. Dr. Carl Muck her husband is interned at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.
