The original caption for this photograph reads: “Villa of Brule. The great hostile Indian camp on River Brule near Pine Ridge, S. D.” By Grabill, 1891
It may have been taken near or on the Pine Ridge (Oglala) Reservation either before or after the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890, in South Dakota.
This same photograph also appears in a Chicago District Court case where Buffalo Bill Cody and Rand McNally Corporation, were sued for using John C.H. Grabill’s photographs without the photographer’s permission. (In the same file folder is a photograph of Buffalo Bill Cody and General Miles looking over the “hostile Indian camp.”)
