Since the end of World War II, the federal government’s role in education has expanded, in part to guarantee for all American students the right to the best education available, in part to ensure the security of the nation. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union placed the artificial satellite Sputnik I into defense had been compromised by inadequate science education in the public schools. As a result, Congress passed the National Defense Education Act, which President Eisenhower signed on September 2, 1958.
