In this activity, you will analyze selected excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, written in 1963 while he was imprisoned for participating in civil rights protests. As you read, focus on how MLK explains the purpose of direct action, why he rejects waiting for change, and how he defines just and unjust laws. Answer each question using evidence from the excerpts.
