Weighing the Evidence

In this activity, you will view several primary sources (visuals and text). Click on each document to see it in an enlarged format and don’t forget to read the title / caption for each document. (Remember, always take what’s given to you!)

After you view each document/image, place it on the scale based on whether or not it supports the United States decision to use the Atomic bomb to end the war on Japan based on military necessity. (This link is a brief, but valid definition of ‘military necessity’). You can place documents on top of each other as well, to tip the scale in one direction or the other.

IMPORTANT!!

  1. When you complete the chart on the website, screenshot it and include it in the Google Doc (Part I on the first page).
  2. On the second page of the Google Doc, complete the chart by following those specific instructions for Parts II & III.
  3. For Parts IV & V, you will be selecting three specific documents/images from the activity that help support your point of view, and one that opposes your point of view. Briefly describe these documents/images, and why they support or oppose your view. (So, a total of four document/images)

Please Note: Activities may not be optimized on mobile devices. For the best experience, complete the activity on a desktop or laptop.
