From 1791-1815, members of Congress earned a daily salary and were compensated for the distance they traveled to and from the nation’s capital. Use this 1791 U.S. Treasury document to calculate Senators’ rate of pay and the amount they were given per mile. At this time, the capital was located in Philadelphia, PA.
