With the addition of the Louisiana Purchase and other new territories to the United States, the debate over free and slave states became bitter. Many compromises were made in order to keep the Union together. A few compromises include the Missouri Compromise of 1820, Compromise of 1850, Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, and Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854.
