Change can take a long time. The first women’s suffrage amendment was introduced in Congress in 1878. For the next 40 years, it was reintroduced regularly, becoming popularly known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Activists spent decades organizing, petitioning, marching, staging hunger strikes, and holding silent vigils before its passage extended full voting rights to women. These documents remind us of the ways in which individuals used their voice to fight for change.
