Today’s activity centers on analyzing the historical context and ethical debate surrounding the use of the atomic bombs on japan during World War II. The images you see depicts the aftermath of one such bombing, connected to the events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1946. As part of this lesson, you will be assigned a position, that is either supporting or opposing the decision made by the United States to use atomic weapons against Japan. Behing by researching key factors such as the projected invasion of Japan, casualty estimates, Japan;’s military stance at the time, and the humanitarian consequences of nuclear warfare. During the debates, you are expected to present clear arguments, use historical evidence, and respectfully respond to opposing viewpoints. Your goal is not only to defend your assigned position but also to demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of the decision and its lasting global impact
for the discussion portion, after the debate concludes, we will come together as a class to reflect on what you have learned. Consider questions such as:, Were there viable alternatives to the using of the atomic bomb? How did the decision affect civilians military targets? How might perspective differ between people in the unites states than those in Japan? You should be prepared to share how your thinking may have changed, and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each side’s reasoning.
