Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in 1822, and escaped in 1849. She became known as “Moses” because she led so many enslaved people to freedom. Being an abolitionist was one of many roles she had during her life. During the Civil War, she was a nurse, a scout, and a spy for the Union Army. After the Civil War, Tubman worked for women’s rights, especially the right to vote. In her later life, she established a home for the elderly.

Look closely at this photograph of Harriet Tubman taken in the early 1870s. Observe the details in the photo and think about what they tell you. Answer the questions below.
