Introduction

En 1887 un grupo de 826 personas Tsimshian abandonan sus hogares en la Columbia Británica, Canadá, y viajan en canoas a las aguas de los EE.UU. a su nuevo hogar en Alaska. El hombre que fue responsable de llevar los Tsimshians a este nuevo lugar fue el Sr. William Duncan, un misionero laico de la Iglesia Anglicana, cuya misión específica era cristianizar al pueblo Tsimshiano. The wedding of Paul Mather and Emma Benson was celebrated at Metlakahtla Christian Mission Church in Metlakahtla, Alaska. Mather became an Episcopalian minister, a packer over the Chilkoot Pass trail, and a guide for the military in WWI.

Sir Henry Wellcome photographed this Tsimishian family at home in Metlakahtla, Alaska, around 1910. A small group of Tsimishian Indians, following Anglican missionary William Duncan, left Metlakahtla, British Columbia, settled on Annette Island, the only Indian Reservation in Alaska, and established Metlakahtla, Alaska.
