This fraktur—an illustrated family record—was found in a Revolutionary War pension and bounty-land-warrant application. It is a lithographed mourning picture, hand colored by the lithographer.
Pvt. Francis Adam Drew served 36 months as a fifer in Col. James Reed’s Second New Hampshire Regiment. In civilian life, Drew was a musician, singer, and teacher. This illustrated family record was filed in Hannah Drew’s widow’s pension application, File W25373 for Francis Drew of New Hampshire. Its stylized scene illustrates the 19th-century view that the cemetery was considered the borderland between life and death, time and eternity, and past and future.
