This is the first of more than 1300 surviving letters from Harry S. Truman to Bess Wallace Truman, written over a period of nearly half a century, and now preserved in the holdings of the Harry S. Truman Library. Writing from the family farm in Grandview, Missouri, to his future wife in the nearby town of Independence, the 26-year-old Truman explains in this letter that he will not be able to visit her over the holidays because his father has suffered a broken leg in an accident, making him "chief nurse next to my mother" as well as boss of the farm. Also mentioned in the letter are Truman's cousins, Mary Ethel and Elizabeth (Nellie) Noland, who lived across the street from Bess in Independence.
